Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a chronic brain disorder that affects how you focus on things and behave. It can interfere with your ability to learn, work and interact with others. It’s a common condition that affects children and adults of all ages.

ADHD can lead to problems in school and at home, as well as with relationships and addiction. It may also cause mood swings, depression, eating disorders and risk-taking behaviors.

Treatment for adulthood includes medication, psychotherapy, education and self-help groups. These methods can help people with ADHD learn better behavior and develop the skills they need to make a successful life.

Medications: Stimulants are the most commonly used drugs for treating ADHD. These medications are designed to increase the brain chemicals dopamine and norepinephrine, which play essential roles in thinking and attention. They are typically prescribed by a doctor and can be very effective, but they can have side effects.

Counseling: Many people with ADHD find that counseling can be helpful to improve their self-esteem, cope with family and relationship issues, and reduce stress. This type of therapy often involves talking with a counselor and participating in counseling sessions.

Social skills training: For some people with ADHD, social skills training is useful to help them interact more effectively with others. This can include teaching people with ADHD how to respond in different situations, such as when someone interrupts them or if they are feeling nervous or upset.

CBT: Cognitive behavioral therapy is another treatment option for those with ADHD who are not responding to medication. This type of therapy can help people with ADHD learn to recognize and change their thinking habits that are causing their problems.

Early detection and treatment are key to living a healthy, fulfilling life with ADHD. Without proper diagnosis and treatment, the symptoms of ADHD can interfere with everyday activities, leading to poor school performance, depression, family stress and disruption, substance abuse, delinquency, accidents, job failure and a number of other problems.

Medical Evaluation: Your child’s doctor will talk with you and your child about the behaviors that you have noticed over time. They’ll ask about your child’s health and activity level, as well as complete a checklist of their symptoms.

Your child’s doctor will then check their eyesight and hearing to make sure that there’s nothing else going on that could be causing the symptoms of ADHD. They may also recommend a referral to a mental health specialist, who will run tests and do a more thorough examination.

Parenting for ADHD: There are some basic things that you can do to support your child with ADHD, such as establishing good routines and helping them develop good study skills. These simple strategies can make a big difference in your child’s ability to manage their ADHD symptoms.

Reward System for Your Child with ADHD: Taking the time to reward your child with immediate praise and positive feedback can be a great way to encourage their good behaviors and improve their self-esteem. You can use a point system or other means of rewards that your child will understand.

You’ve probably heard the therapeutic cliché of “they have to want to change!” – and there’s some truth in it – we can throw a lifeline to a client, but they need to grab it.

Ultimately we don’t, shouldn’t, and can’t force people to engage in therapy, but we can help to show those in need of it that there is no shame in needing help sometimes.
